House Dance Class

It probably sounds surprising, but the relations between hip-hop and house is closer than we think in many ways, but let’s start with the concept of house itself, since it also has several readings.

The origin of the name house as a musical trend is linked to the name of the “Warehouse” club in Chicago, where due to the popularity of the unique sound of the sets of the New York DJ Frankie Knuckles, the style played there began to be called house music, because of the phase “Just gimme that house music!” that was said in record stores a lot those days.

On the other hand, house – as it manifests itself in several cases in the culture related to dance – has a deeper meaning. House is a reference to the home, the place where we can safely be ourselves, as well as figuratively to the family, to the communities formed in dance clubs.

The creation of house music in today’s sense – as well as hip-hop – was born from disco music.

It is not a negligible factor that the best DJs were first dancers, creative artists or even sound engineers, and from this point of view, e.g. disc jockeys who had advanced from being dancers could raise the concept of dance music to a new level, as they had a better sense of which tracks they could use to “tune” the club audience.

House dance is practically a mixture of countless previous styles, as it includes the movements of salsa, breaking, roller skating, tap dance, ballet, capoeira, hip-hop and many other dances. The connection between hip-hop and house, is disco music, and on the other hand, the dancers, since the same dancing environment went to both hip-hop and house clubs. Proof of this is the MOPTOP family from New York, who also play an important role in the development of hip-hop and house dance, and they are also responsible for bringing these styles into dance studios, since these dance styles were basically designed for club dancing and not for education.

As one of the key figures in house, Ejoe Wilson, said: “Don’t move to music, let music move you”
